Title: Found new bacteria that uses syenite instead of phosphorous.
Post by: Botsareus on December 04, 2010, 12:48:38 PM
They found an "alien"  bacteria that uses syenite instead of phosphorous. It was all over the news, I can't believe no one posted it.

lol, check the google results (http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=syenite+bacteria&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=4824b41ba0d4cfd8)

(this thread is apparently first hit result)

Probably because it is arsenic (http://www.google.com/search?q=arsenic+bacteria) not syenite

Also, I found a blog (can't find it again) a while back that pointed out lots of issues with the study.  I don't think it's soon enough to say this is properly "true".  There were some indications that the bacteria was more just arsenic tolerant and lived on the tiny amount of phosphorus that the researchers gave it.
