Naw, I aint an anime fan. Never could get into the whole "cartoon with adult subtext" thing...
I just like cute pics
-
I like drawing manga and stuff a little, yet I've never opend an anime or maga book/film... actually I read a tutorial book on how to draw manga... and maybhe some of the cartoons I used to watch might be called manga but hey, can't avoid the influence of Japan - grand as it is.
-
@moonfisher- you'd be surprised what can appear in manga... I'm sure somewhere in the internet, there actually is a manga drawing of a girl with arms for boobs... with anime, the only limit is your imagination
@sammeh- anime is all about cuteness... and not all of them have an adult subtext! That's just the most memorable ones (see above). Here's some really cute anime you'd probably like:
Azumanga daioh: a show about an adorable 12-year-old HS student, and her adventures with her HS friends. OMG FRIKKIN CUTE!
Lucky star: The "Seinfeld" of anime. A show about absolutely nothing... For example, the entire first episode, they were talking about which side of a chocolate cookie is the "head"... they never really figured it out.
@ashton- see above for the BEST ANIME SHOWS EVER to get you started.

I'm going to go hang myself now...
Naw, I'm just joking (or was I.) But seriously, what ever happened to:

I don't mind anime actually, but I generally avoid it because theres ALOT of weird stuff out there.

eheh... SLIGHTLY creepy?
I gotta be honest, I'm thinking I'd like to go to japan, simply because of the vast cityscape (I love big cities)... If the largest city was in antarctica, I'd want to go there instead. The problem is, I hear they HATE foreigners, especially 17yo americans, who have been known to run around screaming "KA-WAH-EEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!" at the top of their lungs. I'm not one of those (pardon my name).
Anyway, have any of you guys been to japan? Is it as creepy as it sounds? Does it really have a vast cityscape? Are they really as evil toward foreigners as they sound?
Should I go? I swear it has nothing to do with my like-age of anime, really. I just LOVE the city is all, and high-tech stuff. And seafood. And the ocean. I was thinking my second-place destination might be new york or los angeles, but neither of those have giant TVs displaying huge advertisements on top of 30-story-high glass-and-metal monoliths. They just have... smog. And trees. I hate trees.

Wait, you like advertisments? I hate cities honestly. I live in the middle-of-nowhere now, but I've been to cities before and their so... big? Claustrophobicish? Crowded? I dunno, I just don't like them. And the suburbs drive me crazy. You can drive for miles and see nothing but houses! And they keep ripping up good farmland to build new ones!
By the way, I'm pretty sure every country you go to will hate 17 yo americans running around screaming. I don't know why though...

They're not terribly popular in America either
This (http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci1204468,00.html) comes to mind. Japan just has to put these everywhere young tourists go and problem solved!
-
OK, maybe I explained myself wrong...
I'm NOT going to run around screaming, BUT lots of kids do this only in japan, which is why no-one there likes americans. So I'm thinking they'll instantly associate me (17yo Caucasian) with those kids... Understandably, since the last 50 americans were running around screaming.
So that's the problem I mean...
This better explains it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88fvKD6qJCY...feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88fvKD6qJCY&feature=related)
Note the "Japanese Only" signs.
-
I have a (caucasian) friend at work that lived in Japan for a while when he was growing up. He says that Japanese culture is incredibly xenophobic, even racist. For whatever that's worth.
Also, he says when you visit you should definitely make explosion-mushroom-cloud noises with your mouth and accompany it with hand gestures whenever anyone is rude to you. Or maybe that was "definitely do not"... One of those two
-
I was SO gonna do tha to random peoplet! And you're saying maybe I shouldn't? oh man!
Also, yes I do love advertisements, especially if they're on huge TVs in the middle of the city. I just love seeing technology everywhere, I can't stand rural places.
Plus, have you seen their bathrooms? They're INCREDIBLE! They come with video games if you're bored, and built-in air fresheners, and computers for surfing the internet! I feel like going to japan just to use their bathrooms. Yet another way that technology can become part of our lives.

You know, Mr. peanut, you're right, whatever happened to my promise of never talking about anime? Well, The truth is what I meant was I want to put all my anime ramblings in one location, and I was thinking I would do that here instead of random topics, saying things like
"OMG your sim is so KAWAII DESU!!!!"
That's an exaggeration, but you know what I mean. So, I'm going to talk about anime here, or maybe start an anime thread in the rant section. That way, I'm happy cuz I get to talk about anime, and you're happy cuz you don't have to read it! It's a win-win situation!

haha, looks like I created an awkward silence...

*Chirp* *chirp* *chirp*
So...

uhm...

Hi!
Just breaking the silence...

I like anime... I think it's mostly nostalgia from growing up watching it.
But I still think some of the movies are pretty cool, i liked Akira and Ghost in the shell a lot. And back when they came out there where no special effects in movies that could compare.
Also like stuff like Ishiro and the witches (Think it's called). Oh and Ninja scroll, that was a sick movie too
But of all those movies I think Ghost in the shell is the one with the lieast wierd sh!t in it. So it's kind of the most realistic one and it's about cyborg cops in the future and a hacker that takes over peopels minds...
Just saying those guy's are f***ing cazy :

who's f***ing crazy, the japanese?
*deleted*
NEway, yes moonfisher, I LOL'ed at those, so funny!
EDIT: OMG I JUST FORGOT ABOUT TOKYO MEWMEW!!! Thats another of my favorite animes. In fact, its the only serious anime I like. Its about these mutant teenage girls who can turn into cat-people and must save the world from mind-controlling aliens.
Did that sound cheesy?
-
oh mr. peanut, that link is EPICC!!!!
You know, Mr. peanut, you're right
Mwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Now you can't call me Mr. Peanut anymore.

Dang. I give up on life

nums, you'll find that asian cultures are generally 'xenophobic and even rascist' and extremely patriotic (most of the time) and thats what creates their unique culture. it also explains why they were so isolated from the western world. in fact, i bet that they probably could have as many colonies as britain had if they had expanded a bit more... but im chinese so thats probably why i have that opinion :P
i also love anime!!! naruto is the best!!
moonfisher の bots 怖い!! O.O theyre too good D:
-
I'd like to think you can be patriotic without being too xenophobic. Are other asian cultures traditionally zenophobic? I know there's a lot of modern animosity between eg: China and Japan, but was that also true in the 19th century or earlier?
-
The reason for the animostity between Japan and China is because China was the target of many Japanese attacks. This is true even long before the 19th century. Also, I wouldn't say that its in their 'tradition' to be xenophobic, but asian cultures are generally more closed to others outside their country than others. For example, take modern day Japan. You will find that their immigration laws greatly favour Japanese-background immigrants.
