Title: What the heck is a Wuauboot?
Post by: PurpleYouko on April 05, 2005, 09:19:54 PM
I was just typing a message when my computer let rip with an enormous fart noise and popped up a message to tell me that "Wuauboot" had caused a critical error and was about to terminate.

I have never heard of a Wuauboot and sure as heck wasn't running any such program so WTF is going on here

I reckon my PC is schizophrenic or something. That is just messed up

OK I just ran a search on wuauboot.

It would appear to be some kind of auto-update software made by Microsoft.

I can just imagine the brainstorming session that came up with a name like that.

Programmer a: Right lads what shall we call this new auto-update software that we are going to package to an unsuspecting public?

Programmer b: UHHH let's call it auto-update?

Programmer c: NAH! That's just boring. We need an interesting name.

Programmer b: How about Wuauboot? That's out there with the fairies.

Programmer a: YEAH! That is just the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that made Microsoft what it is today. I like it

Programmer c: I was wondering how we were going to top Windows Millenium Edition. Sorted!

Microsoft!! You just have to love 'em don't you?

Microsoft's problem is that it loves acronyms.  If they would just stick with actual words, everyone would be alot happier!!

Exampels?

Hal.dll -> hardware extraction layer.  A better name?

YoThisHelpsUsFigureOutWhatYourComputerIsRunningSoDontFuckWithThis.dll

I rest my case.

That would be me most likely

I just have this uncrollable curiosity that leads me into the strangest files to find out what the little bastards are really doing on my PC.

Someone else who does this all the time would have to be the guy who wrote the code for "Spybot S&D", without which we would all have our personal details spread far and wide by other idiots that set these stupid little dll files and stuff in our PCs to read all our personal stuff and sell it to the highest bidder for all I know.

I wouldn't try it in windowsXP unless you know what you're doing.  But windows 98 has only like 10 things running if nothing is running.  It's really easy to know what does what, and when an imposter (spywar or virus) pops up, I can usually get rid of it manually.  How cool is that?
