Black Shoals (http://www.blackshoals.net/) is a very interesting use of artificial life.  Its agents are actually pretty similar to our bots, and feed from sources that grow or shrink based on real time stock market data.

They could at least have a java sim to look at. Only pictures.    The idea is pretty cool though.

I think this falls mostly into the Evolutionary art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolutionary_art) side of alife.  So it was a sort of performance art.  Like mime XD
