Bugs and fixes / menu spelling error OPEN 2.43.1M
« on: October 27, 2008, 04:41:15 PM »
I switched this topic back to open since this was not corrected in 2.43.1m and is not corrected as of 2.44

Evolution and Internet Sharing Sims / Pfft! Just tell me what to do.
« on: July 01, 2008, 08:32:33 PM »
I find a good technique to find the optimal costs for the bot in an environment is to start with low costs then increase the costs over time until the population stabilizes to a level that you are comfortable with. The population should drop somewhat and stabilize below its old peak. If the past cost increase didn't lower it enough increase it again. The biggest problem with this technique is that you will have to be on the ball to lower the costs to prevent the population from dying out if you set the cost too high. Therefore it may be a good idea to set a population (somewhat lower than your goal) that the costs will drop to zero if it reaches and reinstate the population once it goes up. If the population hovers at this bottom range then you should decrease costs.

Darwinbots Program Source Code / NSIS-based installer
« on: June 28, 2008, 01:55:09 PM »
This installer is a good idea it is much improved over the 2.1 installer which is ready for greener pastures. I suggest a few changes to the setting for animal minimalis evolution. Number one the field is set too big, animal minimalis is not well designed for such a field as big as the one set by default and most of the time it just sits around and gets boring. Number two is that you need to add costs or the whole simulation will grind to a halt with population bloat. While this isn't that hard for someone who has ran sims before, it may become a problem for the beginners who I would expect to use this setting. All around I think the installer is quite good.

I believe I encountered the same bug as numsgil with the settings reverting to the previous settings I'm not sure how that will effect the validity of my suggestions.

Bugs and fixes / menu spelling error OPEN 2.43.1M
« on: June 27, 2008, 08:29:28 PM »
When searching through the menu I navigated to the objects menu, then went to the mazes menu. In this menu is an option called sprial I believe it is meant to be spiral as that is the type of maze that it makes.

Bugs and fixes / 2.43y performance drop OPEN (NEED REPRO)
« on: January 15, 2008, 11:34:47 PM »
Here are the bots. All my sims are done with graphics disabled for the speed boost unless I'm observing the bots behavior. My observation of the perf drop was in cycles per second.

Bugs and fixes / 2.43y performance drop OPEN (NEED REPRO)
« on: January 03, 2008, 10:11:01 PM »
Heres the sim. The performance difference seems to be higher the smaller the sim area I use. Very large sims don't seem to have any difference in performance but a minimal sized sim can have nearly 4x the performance hit from 2.43x. I also had the energy/body slider set at 10 but forgot to change that back after testing. Otherwise everything is the same

Newbie / How did you find DarwinBots?
« on: January 03, 2008, 06:40:31 PM »
I found DarwinBots while poking around Wikipedia too. I was randomly browsing through articles when I stumbled on free-ware games. From there I saw open source games and checked to see what I could find. I went through the list and took a look at the description of DarwinBots. I found it interesting so I downloaded the game.

Bugs and fixes / 2.43y performance drop OPEN (NEED REPRO)
« on: January 03, 2008, 06:26:45 PM »
I've recently downloaded version 2.43y. I've noticed a large performance hit. Simulations running in version 2.43y go 2-3 times slower than version 2.43v. I've tested other versions including version 2.43x to see if they had the performance hit too but they do not. I've tested different bots and have tested bots using different simulation settings and the problem still persists. Why is this? Has there been additional debugging code added that I am not aware of?
