I'm hoping to do computer science this year in University so I am going to be utterly fed up of it before long.

Bot Tavern / Bots with Feelings

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if it would be possible to make a bot that had a reeeally basic set of 'emotions' for events. Not the kind of emotions we think of, rather crude weightings that are associated with events.

Like being shot at or having low energy would give a negative weight. Reproducing or feeding would give a positive weight. Then the bot could act in such a way as to make its 'emotional state' as high as possible by carrying out the appropriate events.

I know this would be no mean feat and would probably make the bot clunky and slow in a competition but this is just food for thought lol.

I was thinking maybe that the code we write in for the bot's genome could be interpreted into a more diverse language that is closer to real DNA, I.e 'store' could be changed to 'TTG' for example. But store could also have values 'TTA', 'TGG' etc which would mimic the redundancy nature uses to avoid massive errors in DNA. Also it would mimic the shift point mutations where deletions of insertions make massive differences throughout the entire genome.

 I have had a look at the 7 problems and the only one I have a hope of understanding is the Riemann function one. As far as I can make out he derived a function for the pattern of prime numbers in the number system which consists of complex numbers, numbers made from real and imaginary components. And apparently it is conjected that the real component is 0.5 but noone can prove it or find out why...
Don't you just love maths??

Lol [Bot] I know this is probably a totally useless idea but it's a fun one nevertheless. I don't suppose there could be many applications other than what [Nums] suggested.

I was thinking maybe it could learn to change its own genome using viruses or something crazy like that to give itself an advantage in a situation. Dunno if it'd work though.

Biology / Neural networks using bots

Hey guys! 'Cos I am so new to DB and am not as well versed in biology and computer science as some of you, I don't know if this is a stupid idea or not.

I was wondering if it would be possible to make a neural network consisting of bots connected together in a specific way? Each bot would act like a neuron in the 'brain'. I'm not really sure what the point of this would be as the network would have to be large and would be very vulnerable to other bots. It's more of a think topic than a practical one.

The net could be used to control other bots, I.e. it could be used as a 'queen' to direct the behavious of 'workers.'

Tell me what you think, and sorry if this topic has already been discussed somewhere else!

I have read about cases of normal XY males becoming females because of the IQC (I think) of the X and Y chromosomes... the X chromosome having the DAX gene to make a human female and the Y chromosome having SRY to make them male. However, the X chromosome can obtain an extra DAX which makes them physically female when genetically male. I think I have all those crazy anagrams the right way round lol.

Number [1] is really interesting, it's like an abstract form of symbiosis. Neither has a dramatic effect on the other but the connection is definitely there. That would be an amazing aspect for DB. Evolving bots that learn to co-exist.

What if there was a really big population with a small genome? Wouldn't it be easier to get lots of mutations there, some of which are bound to be useful?
Also what is the point of a mutation deleting parts of a gene? Should altering or copying be the only two operations, as I would have thought this would be less likely to mess the bot up.

Hey everyone! I'm new to the boards and to DB in general lol but this post is really interesting so I thought I'd poke my nose in lol.

Like [shvarz] said isn't the only method of correction in DNA the redundancy of code? Like lots of different groups of letters encode the same protein? But things can go seriously crazy with shifting point mutations where a letter is deleted and all the groups change? I read somewhere that's how the diversity of blood groups came about. But DB doesn't just delete letters it deleted entire lines doesn't it? And even if it did delete letters it would make no sense 99% of the time.

Lol I haven't actually said anything of any help but just thought it'd be something interesting to say.
