Has anything of interest happened? Is anyone even running it now?
-
I think Testlund is interested in running it again. But there are some bugs I still need to fix to get it to be runnable.
-
I tried to run it through the night between Sunday and Monday until I couldn't stand the noise from my computer. Tried to sleep with ear plugs but it didn't help. At 4 am I had enough and turned it off. Nobody was online.
So I won't be able to run sims much until I have a new computer. I think this one may break any day now so I'm trying not to have it running more than necessary.
-
Try underclocking it and removing the fan. Should increase life expectancy and take care of the noise problem.
-

Unless you know what you're doing. I'd think life expectancy of the CPU would decrease.
-
Underclocking the CPU means it should last longer just because it doesn't get as hot and doesn't deal with as much power. But I'm not sure if you can underclock modern CPUs to the point that passive cooling systems alone will suffice.
If you're computer savvy and don't mind some really weird looking stuff you could probably open up your computer and attach a truly monsterous passive heat sink to the CPU to keep it cool. I imagine a heat sink the size of a football would probably keep your CPU cool enough. Not sure if they make those anywhere though.
-
Well, if you're gonna go through the trouble of buying new components, why not just get a new fan?
Or, my favorite idea: Drop it in an aquarium full of vegetable oil. People have done that, no problems occurred, even the fan should still work. It'll be silent, and the fan will still work. Plus, it would be very fitting to have DB running off of a computer embedded in slime...
-
I was skeptical about the vegetable oil till I found this link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ8L1Prl6tk). Not sure what the long term affects are though. Would be interested to know if anyone's tried this for several years. And good luck ever trying to assemble your computer above oil again. You could probably put several motherboards in the same tank if you had a server farm of old P3's or whatever.
-
Well, I tried jknilinux suggestion by underclocking my graphics card which is what my noisy side panel fan was cooling, with the ATI Tray Tool utility.
It didn't help one bit! Even lowering the speed of both core and mem to minimum didn't even lower the temp 0.1 degrees!
Still I tried to remove the side panel/fan just to see how much the temp would go up. The default was around 37 degrees celsius and it slowly went up to 68. It rises so slowly so I don't know if it will continue to rise above what the display can show eventually, which is above 79 degrees.
I've seen videos on Youtube about oil cooling. You need fans to keep circuling the oil and I bet it will be hard on the fans. It must be difficult to get effective flow over the hardware.
Water cooling with tubes must be much more effective.

Alright, I'm running in IM now if anyone is interested.

Unless your graphics card is being stressed by a game or benchmark or whatever it's running at something like 1% of it's maximum theoretical output. It's smart enough to not draw extra power if it doesn't need it, so you won't see a difference when underclocking until you run a game or benchmark. Underclocking is more for throttling how fast the card goes during high load situations. Which Darwinbots doesn't really cause at all. And normal desktop use doesn't cause either.
If your fan is really noisy it might be old or your drivers aren't set up to lower the fan RPMs when the system doesn't need the extra cooling. You might google your system and see if others have complained about fan noise, see if there's a replacement fan if it's old (usually go for about $20-$30), or if there are "fan drivers" floating around somewhere. On my Dell laptop, for instance, there was a utility I downloaded that let me hard set the fan speeds. When they're on low you can't even hear them but when they're on high it's like a vacuum cleaner.
Still I tried to remove the side panel/fan just to see how much the temp would go up. The default was around 37 degrees celsius and it slowly went up to 68. It rises so slowly so I don't know if it will continue to rise above what the display can show eventually, which is above 79 degrees.
Yeah, you probably need a fan of some sort. Is it the sort that attaches to the side panel itself? Is it associated with the cpu or gpu specifically or is it just there to move air through the case in general?

Water cooling with tubes must be much more effective.
I'll be surprised if that ever becomes the norm, though.

I didn't think that far. I was actually doing the test while running a sim. Usually the temp goes up a few degrees when running DB but with minimum clock settings the temp stayed the same. With more intense graphic application the difference could be greater as you say. 37 is my idle mode temp.

btw about IM... Which one is most populous? Is it quickdraw?
-
For the longest time it was fruitfly and seasnake, but it was hard to tell which was which because both used viruses to reproduce, so you might have a colony of "sea snake" that were actually fruitfly viruses, and vice versa.
I didn't think any copies of them survived, but if Testlund saw some fruitfly recently I guess I stand corrected.
-
The fruitflies on IM where spread by the flyfruit alge, so there where no actual fruitflies on IM. But I think there was a substantial amount of infected seasnakes wich had mutated and no longer killed regular alge (Leeched on them instead and entered kill mode if someone attacked the alge).
This is one of the seasnakes I got in from one of EricL's sims (Think he had 3 running on IM)

After the flyfruit had spread to all the sims I no longer saw any of the original seasnakes pop in. And EricL locked his sims to prevent viruses infecing alge at some point, which is probably also why the infected bots evolved into leeching and defending the alge instead of eating everything in sight. But the high amount of bots also slowed down the sims a lot, so I don't think they ran that long. I was going for the 9000 bots on IM challenge, but I only saw seasnakes reach 7000 :'(
(Not sure if other bots on IM where infected aswell, I think I saw one called 000 which had been infected, but there weren't that many of them, and there where no mutations and only the dna from the fruitfly virus, so it could just as well have been someone running a test of some sorts, maybe making alge resistant to fruitflies or something).
-
I'm trying to use IM if anybody is still doing so.
-
I got my internet mode on now to. Theres been some strange things going on with my computer lately, especially with darwinbots so I have no idea what will happen.
-
I got a bot that wasn't one of mine! hooray
-
My sim is being dominated by your HSLiteSammeh and some veg called antsy along with ten or eleven alga_minimalis. Your bots got the cost multiplier up to 80. (sorry i was just looking for an excuse to use that one)
-
I will join you guys for a while, disabled my popcount function so it will run faster...
And I am also using a completely different mutations module so lets see what happens...
-
HSLiteSammeh is pwning I can't get rid of it even the F1 league champion Quickdraw just reduced its numbers before becoming extinct itself Mind you, I'm not really running under F1 conditions, pretty sure it wouldn't stand a chance in a head to head.
EDIT: Was just looking at the best bot in my sim (which currently has it's cost multiplyer at 33 ), it was a really mutated HSLiteSammeh, it actually latches onto a veg, and only starts feeding when it's energy drops below 2000, once it's above, it stops feeding and lets the veg grow a bit It also reproduces when it has 2500 energy, meaning it's essentially evolved from a hunter to a parasite! awesome :3
-
Im away from my computer right now, i left it running in the background at home. When I left HSLiteSammeh was pwning at 80 costx. It survives by tie feeding then launching its offspring out into the wild. I saw it do something really cool. It formed a chain, each one connected to the alga and its parent flinging off babies into the sim which would float randomly at speed and then either die or run into another bot and tie to it. Hey whats the internet pop right now.
-
Internet pop doesn't work right on mine, can't download pop files.
Just had to close my sim down because my laptop is screwing up again, but there were 500 in a sim with 34x costs, and 1000 in a sim with F1 costs but with a day/night cycle.
Saved the DNA of one of the more interesting ones, will play with it.
EDIT: back in IM, HSLiteSammeh is doing miles better than HSLiteSammehEVOLVED. ie, 64 to 556.
Also, Houshalter, how high is your mutation setting? Every time I get a bot back from you it has about 100 more mutations
-
I keep my sims with no more than 100 bots and 50 to 100 vegs. HSLiteSammeh isn't native to my sim so I don't know what rates you started it with. Its been playing with delta mutations so what ever it was its changed. I have the mutations oscalate between 1000 cycles on 16x and 5000 on 1/16x. The idea is to have a period of mutations then have the bots compete against each other giving time for the best strains to breed, then forcing mutations on them again. Im going to add a more mutatable alga minimalis (with tons of random numbers following its first gene and max mutation rates) to try to force the bots to evolve more.
It always gives me an error message when it downloads them to but it seems to work most of the time. I've sent 3,551 bots to the internet so far and only a thousand have come in from other people so beware when you start IM cause you'll be flooded in HSLiteSammehs.
By the way, what was the origanal DNA for your bot? It would be interesting to see how much its changed so far.

HSLS just got wiped out by Tibbles First Bot in my sim
-
Mine to. Ah well, thats competition. I just want to know how it happened. Did The bot go extinct and the "First" took its place, or is it just better. Anyways, did you happen to save an evolved version of it? I think I saved a sim last night where it was still dominant so later i will try to reload it and see what happens.
-
Nah, Tibbles bot is way better. A HSLS grabs onto to it to feed, it turns round and shoots it till it dies. Tibbles bot wins out every time. I have tne of the massively mutated HSLS:

If anyone wants to know, I am currently running IM right now. All my sim has in it ATM is Alga_Minimalis, but it seems to be working.
Actually, something odd is going on. I got a blind bot from testlund, and it keeps timing out and the program starts bugging out. Using 2.44.04 BTW.
Nevermind, it's working OK. I've got a bunch of SF2.1's running around in my sim, waiting for something to happen. Let me know if you run into a few, their seem to be quite a few leaving my sim.
-
Yes, it started out nice before the server errors. Got my sim whiped out too times, first by the Bouncer bot and then by Slam Funk 2.1.
-
Nice to hear my bot's kicking ass in IM even without anything F3 illegal.
I'm also having lots of errors downloading population files. Did anyone send anything into IM? I'm getting a few SF2's from yesterday, they're named differently than the ones im using today, those have the full F3 league title. I haven't seen any bots that I didn't send myself tho.
EDIT: Interesting. It seems that after accidentally leaving the sim running for a few hours while running dwarf fortress on another computer and running through 125K cycles, a new strain of SF has come to dominate the sim, with most bots appearing as the same shade of purple. Seeing as there are no competitors in the ecosystem I am doubtful that its combat abilities are still top notch, but I do think i will leave this sim running through the night.
-
If anybody is still on, there's a new strain of HSLS I'm trying out called "HSVirLite2". If you'd let me know how it's doing in your sims, and the settings, that'd be great
-
Ya, I started it. I just reloaded in old sim where it was still dominant to see what went wrong. The mutation rates were pretty low, only one mutation every twelve generations. I just have it on f1 settings. 50 veggie limit. 90 costx. dynamic costs targetting 100 pop limit. Can't think of any other settings though. Oh, its a size 4 or 5 size sim.
-
Have you got any of TA-183's SF bots? I haven't seen those yet.
-
No, every time I start a sim, I come back five minutes later and find its frozen. Don't tell me its just loading because I wait like 20 minutes and it doesn't do so much as flash.
-
I've had that a few times, does your internet log say something like "FTP timed out" by any chance?
-
Mine does that. When it freezes like that, it takes maybe two minutes before it goes through another cycle of maybe 1000-2000 sim cycles, then freezes again. Check your total cycle count, you might find yourself to be wrong.
-

sorry i skipped a bunch of time. I just pasted the begging, middle (were I first saw the problem) and end. Oh, and your HSLS died. Its not a good combat bot, just a survivalist.
-
It does that a lot. Once I switch IM to use the new server, though, those should go away.
-
Holy balls.
I come back from playing Dwarf Fortress for a few (okay, MANY) hours, and I look at the population graph. Yet again, SF2.1 has mutated to produce a new dominant strain, this time capable of an incredibly high population. A few hours ago, a fairly standard population curve was there, hovering between 50-200 bots. Then, for some reason, a steady curve upwards occurred, and happened to be a quadratic one. Population rose exponentially before abruptly leveling out around 1500 bots.
I love this fucking bot.
By the way. The server appears to be unreachable, are you switching the IM servers?
EDIT: GOD DAMNIT!! My C drive reached capacity because of the fracking autosaves! AND I LOST THE NEW, BLUE SF2!! SCREW YOU, HARD DRIVE. SCREW YOU.
-
Yes, I'm switching the IM server, too. It will be a day or so before I figure it out.
-
Got four sims running, may start another in a minute. Get on there, show me your bots
-
I'm trying but I'm having some strange issues with my firewall which simply ignores that I have allowed DB to connect and blocks it anyway.
-
Looks like it's working now but I don't see anybody else out there.
-
I will try to turn on my IM sim for a while....
-
I'm online, haven't seen any foreigners for ages. My sim's full of Fluffy (my first battle bot). I'd love some company.

Ditto. I guess IMs still down.
IM's always been like that for me, with the errors and such. I've had a few bots in before, but not many.
-
 Old post, I know. Why did IM stop working this time?
-
So it's not working? I thought I would give it a try tonight.
-
It is currently still not working no.
