Title: Long Time Simulation Bug
Post by: Botsareus on April 07, 2005, 12:36:32 PM
After running a simulation for 10- 15 minutes on high speed mode the following happens:

All hunters stop moving, all hunters start getting assined random angel of fasing, they look like they "jump-turn", non of them move although the dna clearly says for them to move.

The settings are as follows:

1-FirstBot (all mutations at 200 , sliders at defult) <--- My firstbot is in the bestory
1-Alga Minimaly(cant spell)
F1 conditions , (not F1 mode)

Just to calrify:  The bug is related to fast drawing mode?  You turn on the fast mode and this happens?  What happens if you turn it off?  What if you don't turn it on at all?

Becasue it has nothing to do with long time simulations:  I am currently running a sim continouosly for almost 9 hours, which resulted in almost 7 million cycles and nothing like that happened yet.  But I don't use fast drawing mode - either I watch the sim or turn the graphics off completely.

Haven't seen this one myself.

How does "Flickermode" (fast graphics) work for you guys anyway?

On this PC (no specialist graphics card) it doubles speed with less than a couple hundred bots while on my PC at home (slower CPU but BIG hardware graphics card) it makes little or no difference.
For sims over 500 bots it makes no difference on either system

yes the "tuggle fast mode" is on

Its not a grahpix bug , its a sirios bug with the physics as I can see

Are you referring to my new fast graphics (flickermode) or the old fast forward button?

The old fast forward button.

All that button does (supposedly) is to display graphics only every 10th(I think) cycle rather than every cycle as in normal mode.

Don't see why that would have an effect on DNA

Thats why I think it depands on the lengh of the simulation...

How do you make Firstbot survive that long?

In my first 3 attempts to run the sim as you described above, all the robots died out in less than 30 seconds.

My fourth attempt is doing a little better though. I have about 40 of them now.

So far 5 minutes without incident. I will keep you posted.

starting robots is 5 with energy 3000, friction=1!

I was also going to the robot dna viewer a lot , maybe thats a cause...

Actualy right now I am trying to get this bug again myself...

Make sure plants are not blocked...

10 minutes, 62,000 cycles. No problems

Fast forward button is on?

I was also going to see robots mutation rates alot , try that...

15 minutes, 100,000 cycles and still 55 happy little firstbots flying around.

By pausing the sim and double clicking a bot?

yes, after you pause go to robot options , mutation rates... select the robot first , "robot options" is a menu

20 minutes. 130,000 cycles. Been looking at DNA all over the place. 38 happy little wildly mutated firstbots still zipping around with no problems.

They still haven't learned to turn yet though.

Did you catch the second part?

My cycles is 41500 with fast forward on all the time... looks good,

Btw even when I did bot8g it still did not know how to turn... and that was a special system of evolution , not this simple simulation test...

got to love the big fat alga...

Yes

I have been playing with all kinds of stuff, including everything you listed.

ran for 38 minutes, 284,000 cycles on accelerated speed without so much as a hiccup then the bloody thing crashed with an overflow error.

Like I said, I never run looooong sims and that is why.

My is at 140000 right now , lest time I got that bug was a lot shorter trust me, I gess its a really rear bug, never mind PY. Or it might be that all my robots suddenly began to act stuped and reproduce like crazy without moving... that would explain them suddenly changing angles...
