For anyone interested in the behaviour of real world ants and ant colonies, I highly recommend Ants at Work by Deborah Gordon (http://www.amazon.com/Ants-Work-Insect-Society-Organized/dp/0393321320/sr=8-1/qid=1164224495/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-4307404-3428005?ie=UTF8&s=books).  This book is well written, entertaining and well suited to anyone who wishes to write code or evolve virtual ants.
