Suggestions / Plants are too powerful
« on: November 16, 2007, 01:59:05 PM »
Agree with the title of post, cautious about how to go about it as re. Shvarz's comment.

Production of chloroplasts as cost, size (or number of chloroplasts) related to energy received? Chloroplast needs a certain volume of body limiting max chloroplast per bot maybe...

If you extend that then any ability needs a volume to exist and so one bot with one ability needs to get bigger before getting another ability??

Thanks Nums, comment is appreciated! Never got it as organised as I had intended though.

Is it the purpose you set the bots from the starting gate to the forum they are supposed to be(F1,F2,SB,MB)

Leagues are just run by putting the new bots in the sim(and alga minimalis) and checking the league. And just let it go play. (with F1 conditions)

Those two things are all?

Aren't they admins
Many bots have to be run through more than one league, all bots get entered in the F1 league, but an F2 shortbot would also get entered in the F2 and SB league as well.
Once you have done that for the latest entries you should update the forum league info, upload the latest downloads for the leagues and move the respective bots into the relevant parts of the bestiary.

Timewise; it is quickest to do a batch of bots and then redo all the info and downloads, like Nums said though, some matches can last ages, even if a match takes a 100 rounds you need to leave the 'instant win' button alone. Doesn't happen very often though.

EricL and Nums are a step above admins!

With any luck, seeing as I will have more time on my hands this week, I may get round to clearing the backlog, which would hopefully make it a bit easier for you to get started. No promises though!

Untagged bots / Artemis Minimalis

Hiya y'all

Further to Num's post; the bestiary is a sort of record of the bots, a bot posted there is generally a finished product but open to comment, the bot tavern is more a work in progress thingy.

Like Num's said, the rules aren't set in stone though, we're into evolution here!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/oct...s.climatechange

A synthetic chromosone! 381 genes long and contains 580,000 base pairs of genetic code, of course applying for a patent is a bit of a downer but nethertheless, great achievement!!

In other news I have spotted recently;

http://www.physorg.com/news110643473.html

Researchers think they have devised a way to calculate the rates of evolution, big and cold = bad, small and warm = good

I've failed to update the leagues for far to long, sry.

Not really had the time to do more than browse some of the new posts recently, feel bad about all the entries sitting in the starting gate. Would be happy to pass this job onto somebody else if they feel they are up to it.

You need to have some idea of how the leagues are run (like always using the latest DB release) and preferably some ability to read bot code but other than that it's just the time and willingness to keep the record straight and run the matches!

I'll leave it upto our esteemed mods EricL and Nums to decide but the time seems fitting to pass the baton on...

Feel free to post any questions or volunteer your time here.

Haven't got time to play with this atm but it sounds interesting, would I use it for deciphering 'evolved' code or did you have another use in mind?

Suggestions / Would a *.subspecies sysvar be facist?

Remember, a bot's subspecies number is species relative.
Thankyou for the correction, I'm still not in favour of exposing it though!

Suggestions / Why is there not a .veg?
« on: August 24, 2007, 06:26:51 PM »
Agree with Nums and imperfection;

While I do feel there should be something that makes a veggie different from a bot beyond the autotroph setting I don't think it should be a refsysvar.

Consider the problems plants/fungi can cause, from an evolutionary standpoint, I imagine it should be a big battle, plants have the sunlight advantage, bots have different advantages, some win, some lose but like the old cancer veg we used to be bugged by the option of winning should be open to all.

Generally the philosophy thus far for sysvars (at least as long as I've been around) is to give bots limited and imperfect knowledge about their surroundings.
Nums, Eric, I agree, anything, like instant trigonometry, that gives bots a perfect view shouldn't be. I like imperfection, it's more realistic.

.subspecies devalues all the recognition systems for a start.

Newbie / Appearance of these bots?

I have two Zerobots running around shooting, I think, viruses. Also right now I have seven Zerobots with both slime and a shell and two with just slime. Thus far in this evolution there have been no Zerbots reproducing.
Hiya Randy!

Two things this made me think of;

1: Perhaps since we have lots more posts than we used to about zerobots we should think of making a zerobot section in the forum with its own sticky guide.

2: While Randy had an easy job analysing % bots with shell and slime due to the small sample size, is it possible to increase the analytical properties of the program so that overall properties of a species can be considered with larger populations?

Suggestions / Population Control and selection pressure without costs
« on: August 24, 2007, 05:53:01 PM »
I don't see that this would give bots an undue advantage in the leagues;

It seems a James Bond sort of theme tune 'kill or be killed' might be apt, certainly with the 'instakill' mkshell shots (fixed yet?) it's a sort of non sequitur, I can't see Guardian caring about how many targets it has left!

On the other hand, being as this could be seen as a passive advantage, I think that it could encourage new and novel behaviour among league bots and might be a positive change.

I thought we couldn't do calculations in the conditions section of the gene? Or has that changed now and I'm just living in the past?!!
