Title: Forum Skin
Post by: Numsgil on February 20, 2005, 06:00:13 AM
This forum needs a skin!  I haven't given it a look, but look here (http://support.invisionfree.com/index.php?showtopic=116221) for information on it.  I could do it, but my artistic skill is amateur, and I have the impression it isn't the simplest of processes.  If anyone is really good  at this kind of stuff, volunteer!

I did some skins before (actualy I views some source codes for some skins) for vb applications , you are right its not really an easy prosses , you have to have a pattern or a graphic for each little control, I never did forums before so I cant really help.

I think we can awoid using pictures though just mess arround with the htmls color and frame settings

I could take a crack at it, if you want.  If it should look like the old forum, I could (most likely unsuccessfully) attempt, as long as you gimme the color codes.  ;)

I liked the color scheme of the old forum, but it isn't the only possibility.  I think something with dark colors would work well.  Anyone who wants, put something together, a demo or whatever, and then we can vote on the best one.

I'll get right to it.  A good place for other people to try, too, if they want, is the Invision Free Skin Zone.  Also known as IFSZ, or http://www.ifsz.com/ (http://www.ifsz.com/) .  :D

EDIT:  Or more importantly, this link specifically:

Awesome links!

Although a word of warning, don't enter random values for all of them.  The result was the most horrific thing I've ever seen.

Well, I've made what I hope is a first breakthrough in... uhh... stuff.  :P

I can't post it on the 'net anywhere, and it doesn't look like I can attach it... so, uhh... any emails I can send it to?

Numsgil has all the color codes for it, though.  :)

I'll see if I can set up a special Email address where entrys can be sent.

Alright everyone, submit any skins entries (banners, icons, color schemes, whatever) to  [span style=\'font-size:11pt;line-height:100%\'] ()[/span]

Include "Forum Skin" in the subject line.  I'll forward them to PY.

Color Schemes can be submited as CSS code.  PY then can load it into the forum (I think that's how it works) and it will be visible from everyone's My Controls.

Then we can vote on which is default.

OK Guys

here is the first skin submitted by Syndlig (shades of really dark stuff. greys and black)

I will leave it up for a day or so then revert to the default. (or the next submission)

After we have had a few differnt ones we can vote on which we like the best.

This one is a little dark for my tastes. Don't mind black or anything but some of the text colors don't show up too well on signitures.

Don't blame me. Why not make your own skin and enter it into the competition.

Thanks for the comments anyway. I agree with you.

Just go  here (http://www.ifskinzone.net/applications/aioskingen/aioskingen_simp.php) and plug in some numbers to create your own then email the CSS file that is created at the very bottom of the page (save it as .txt in notepad) to the email address that Numsgil provided.

PY I checked that stuff before already , the problem with it is we have more colors/controls here then in there.

Haven't really played with it myself yet.

That is where this scheme came from though. I know that because I created the CSS file myself from numbers sent me by SyndLig.

For the love of God, people, what's wrong with some nice light colours for a change. All this dark bullshit is doing my head in. Blues. Whites. Pastel purples. Some pale greens, maybe. If I come back tomorrow and my Avatar still looks out of sorts, heads will roll.

Wow, you didn't have to be so harsh about it, I was just trying something that looked slightly similar to the old board.

The orange, I can't explain... I had the font at "ffffff" when I first chose this.

Oh, and yea, I'm attempting icons and banners.

took to heart the people asking for lighter colors and sent Numsgil a blue skin - he said it'll be up tomorrow (or perhaps today if this is tomorrow for you).  Suggestions?

Yea, I like this one.  It works with anything but light blue for signatures.  Only problem is bright text on light-blue for things like "Replying to...", maybe make it more intense a colour or lighten it some more?

Maybe I should put an emotion-o-meter in my posts. Ranging from "serious" to SARCASM FROM the EARS!

Never ever take my posts at face value. Maybe I should use smilies.

Not decided yet but I must agree that this one beats the dark scheme.

I still have a scheme from Numsgil to try out yet. I will put it up on Monday.

I like this one as a nice opposite, but the light blue buttons for reply and stuff look out of place.  That's really one of the only reasons I went with my light blue one.

I actually thought they matched well.  Matches the text color.

We can change the buttons I think.

If no one else wants to sub any we can do the actual voting.  Personally I prefer my own, but that's hardly a surprise.   :boing:

Easy as adding a poll.  the default, syndlig's, lemmonlime's and mine.

Or how about we have all 4 uploaded so people can have their preference, and the default be voted upon?  :)

I may add it back in, but do it such that we get the proceeds from the pay-per-impression.  I figure we could probably earn a few dollars.  Enough to pay for the www.darwinbots.com namespace anyway.  But I'm open to whatever people want.

You need to be extremely careful what you delete here. Those adds are the way that invision pays for us to have a free board.

Carefully check the rules on this before making changes. I am pretty sure that any attempt to change the major stuff like banner adds will get our board deleted completely in short order.  :(

here are the RULES (http://s9.invisionfree.com/DarwinBots_Forum/admin.php?adsess=570dd4825854a07dcec95aad4d2c26dc)

Hot damn everyone!

We just earned $1.23 since I put google ads up.  Considering that we're getting:

.62 per 1000 impressions

and invision charges

.15 per 1000 impressions...

That web space renewal might not be as difficult to afford as I first thought.  I might actually be able to not beg people for money!  We're getting like 2000 impressions every 24 hours...

Anyway, it's been more active lately than usual, but I bet we can at least pay for the namespace fairly easy.
