Evolution and Internet Sharing Sims / Re: Evolution Sim Settings

What is epigenetic memory? I've seen it around a lot on the forums, usually associated with some kind of rage and frustration, actually. I've looked it up, but I need a simpler explanation for a non-biologist peasant like this (I like physics instead). Elements of DNA which can be added to a descendant's DNA as a result of experiences or something like that? Also not sure how this links into getting functional robots. The one I just started yesterday is up to 260k cycles, and it still has a long time to go, but everything seems fine so far.

What do I do about the number of veggies? At the moment it seems as though it is too easy for bots to stay alive even with aging and upkeep energy costs. How do I change the minimum number of veggies? I'm using the current version and I can't find the control for that anymore.

I was confused by what evolution mode does, and became even more confused when I read the tooltip.

Hi all,
Haven't been active on DB for a while but it's good to be back. I have become intensely interested in evolution sims again, and I was wondering about what the optimal evolution sim settings were for a long (and I do mean long), long sim. Last time I did something like this I put a veggie and Animal Minimalis in the sim and the genes of the survivors was just corrupted and useless (or should they be considered useless if the bots were still active? hmmm).

When do bots move past the "cannibal" stage? I've only just passed 70,000 cycles and Animal Minimalis has lost control of when it shoots (that is to say it shoots constantly) and reproduces pretty much every cycle.

Bots - What do you mean evolve veggies? As in get a bot to grow its own chloroplasts? I was inactive during all the chloroplast updates so I don't really know how it all works.

The first thing that Animalis Minimalis usually turns into is a species that either a) shoots constantly regardless of what's in front of it, or b) moves forward while spinning when no target, or c) both. Also, is it even possible for "multi-cellular" bots to appear? Would be quite cool.

I started a new sim: size 7, 100 veggies, 40 bots, x1/2 mutation
Have I done it right? Also, how many cycles will it take for something interesting to happen? The last time I did this, which was a while ago, the most interesting thing that happened was a bot that was on 1 energy and continually reproduced. In the next cycle, the parent would die and then the child would flip around to reproduce again. Advanced propulsion maybe?

How should I set up a sim and how many cycles should I be patiently waiting before expecting something to happen? Basically started with white coloured Animalis Minimalis and some green veggies and set mutations to x1/32. Currently on 119,000 cycles and most/all bots only have 2 mutations total.

Do robots have to build/create chloroplasts or are they free?

Wasn't there something about chloroplasts or something?

Awesome! I look forward to it.

My RE teacher says that mystery is good, but I like answers better. When I ask questions, sometimes it goes unanswered because no-one knows. Argh! I wish there was someone who knew everything that I could talk to (preferably me  :P ). I'm sure there's an expert who could explain but he's not around anywhere :I

Restarts are like cheating though... :/ What I'm saying is that it would be awesome if I just set up a new simulation, forget about it for a week, come back and find a self sufficient and constantly evolving ecosystem. I set up a new one, one that doesn't give much energy per cycle to bots but allows a large veggie population and put Animal Minimalis in. It also has a fair few shapes to make things interesting too. Problem is that the bots ran out of targets to kill and now they are just spinning endlessly. :| I really don't want to really on point mutations for my little guys to evolve into something interesting.

Hello everyone,
I'm having trouble getting an evosim to kick off. First I set the mutation rate to x1/32, and after about 5 and a half million cycles, the zerobots I had put in changed colour, but they just sat there. In fact, even the Algae Minimalis that I put in had mutated beyond reason! So, I decided to start afresh. This time I set the mutation rate to x1/2, reduced veggies and increased zerobots. Still nothing happens! Please help!
