Its a movement vector - a visual representation of the bot's voluntary movement.  Turn it on/off via the View menu.

Don't you think those bots are tiny..?
Compared to what?  If you don't want bot size to vary with body, then feel free to use fixed bot radii.

auto cost??do you mean f1 default?
sorry, it's called Dynamic Costs Adjustment. On the Custom Costs dialog.

2.44 does a lot more.  Also the cycles/sec may just be broken in that old version.

You can limit populations using costs.  Auto costs in particular can keep a sim population within a specific range.

4.4 cycles/sec with 457 bots in such close proximity is about the expected execution speed.  This Topic may be helpful.

Collision elasticity on the Physics tab is what you want.

Sim speed is a function of many factors.  Unless you post your sim, it is difficult to help you.

Bugs and fixes / connection IM?

The IM Population graph opens automatically when you enter internet mode.  Are you certain it's not behind your main sim window?

I have 2 machines connected to IM at the moment.  Usually 3 or 4 others join throughout the day then go away.

I suspect the reason you sim is running so fast is that you too few bots in there.  It really would help if you could exit the simulator, look for a file called lastexit.sim in your \saves subdirectory and post that file to this topic.  That way I can investigate properly.

Welcome to DB by the way....

I suspect you have not specified any bots for your sim.  Do that via the species tab on the options dialog...

Bot Tavern / The F1 League lives again!

I have been unsuccessful in hand-authoring a version of Seasnake that can long survive against the mutated version, now at 3000+ mutations.  Think of that.  Over 3000 mutations.  Fricking amazing.  Whether hand-authored bots can do well against such beasts is the root of curiosity.

If I understand it right you don't have a single problem, Eric?
The only problem I experience is that my connection fails after a day or two.  Restarting the simulator addresses that and it probably has something to do with server session limits.  Switching to the out-of-proc FTP connection code Nums has provided me (which I plan to do at some point) moving to a different FTP server or both may address this.

Occasional, temporary errors are to be expected due to collisions on files.  Part of me just wants to hide the log window as it gives the often incorrect impression there are problems.  One can generally ignore the errors if bots are coming through and the Internet Populations graph is working correctly.  The simulator should be resilient to such problems.

My log is attached.

Port 21 is the command port, port 20 is used for the data (bot and population file) transfer by the FTP libraries.

The other ports are probably short lived ephemeral ports used to receive replies to FTP operations.

All the code does is use FTP on port 21.   64.202.163.2 must be the IP address of darwinbots.com.  The 192.168... stuff is all local LAN stuff, either firewall or DNS or proxy server or some such implicit communication triggered by the FTP calls higher up the stack.  It may be related to all the errors your getting.  Are you on a corporate network using a proxy server?

I saw you connected to IM, got some bots from you, seemed to work just fine from this end.

You may have old bots from long ago in your local transfer directory.  May be where the multiply's come from.  You can delete them if you want to get rid of them.

No bot can slow down IM.  Transfer rates are throttled and each sim follows its own parameters to control population...

WHy do we not see any of these bots do well in internet mode?  Is it because no-one introduces them or it is because they can't compete effectivly in that environment?

Off Topic / US elections
« on: September 24, 2008, 01:29:27 PM »
There are many things to admire about the US (fewer today than in years past) but often, the US public and the government they have allowed embarrass me greatly.  Perhaps I am more travelled than most or consider my membership in homo sapian sapians more important than the fact that I happen to have been born in the middle part of North America.   Perhaps I simply aspire to an unrealistic Star Trek world and should wise up.

I think it's mostly the squandering of so much potential.  To those to whom much is given, much is expected.  It grieves me to see a country and people with so much potential squander it so foolishly.

I voted for Reagan and Bush I.   I'm fiscally conservative and worry about big government, higher taxes and huge entitlement programs.  But I'm socially liberal and hold strong views on such things as privacy rights and personal freedoms, not that either candidate particularly meets my specific criteria in any area.   As I said, it's a choice between the lessor of two evils.
