Bug reports / Reporting
« on: February 14, 2006, 11:11:00 AM »
Just wondering what's happening with bug reporting, etc etc? I've been off site for quite a while; is there now an agreed stable version?

Bot Tavern / Have at you!
« on: February 13, 2006, 11:14:15 PM »
Some people might remember I uploaded a sort of preview of this a while ago; I'm not sure if it has been made redundant in the meantime or anything, but if anyone wants to use it then here we go.

Also, I left a sizable gap between starting and finishing, so I sort of lost the flow of what I was doing... there are probably errors; can people possibly point them out when they come across them?

Off Topic / Newness
« on: January 25, 2006, 06:21:42 PM »
Just wanted to start a slightly random thread to say how glad I am some new people and ideas have been thrown into everything... it seems the forum was beginning to stagnate. I definitely was feeling a general disinterest in DB  :(  but seeing all these new discussions has made me want to start using it again!  :D

Keep it up!

Just had the thought that the soul could be interpreted to mean the cohesive information stored within the DNA of a life form.

Ah well back to work.

Bug reports / Bug Reporting
« on: October 27, 2005, 10:53:27 AM »
Hi everyone  :D

OK well this is where we are gonna be chucking all reports of bugs that have been found in DB, so go ahead and do your worst.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you find a bug, preferably from running 2.37.4 in VB itself, make a note of what you did (if you did anything) just before the bug occurred.

If you are running the program from VB, click 'Debug' when the error box appears. This will bring the VB code to focus with the offending code highlighted in yellow. This highlighted code should be copied along with the name of the function it is from (if applicable) and the form or module, which will be shown on the right.

The highlighted code will also display the values of the various variables and properties, at the point when the program crashed, when you hover your mose over them. It is a good idea to note down the values of each part of the code and post them up with everything else.

If the error occurs from the EXE, then describe what was happening in the sim or what you did before the glitch, or possibly provide the sim file, which should be zipped to save space.

All this info will help us track down the error and its cause, and so to work out possible solutions.

Suggestions / Emergent Systems
« on: October 26, 2005, 08:57:35 AM »
Well since everyone has been quite zen lately in the discussion about artificial laws and the emergence of complex systems from a simple set of rules, I have been thinking a lot.

In a lecture today I had an idea, which may well be already known or discussed, or indeed already in practice. But what the hey.

Why not first define an environment in terms of substances and physics, and then impose some rules for how these substances interact. This would be the only artificial rule-making and if it were modelled after real-life then wouldn't be artificial at all, simply a simplification of reality.

You could then add bots (composed of environmental substances) and define all their behaviours as manipulations of the environment.

You wouldn't need rules for their behaviour as they would already be defined from the basic interactions of the environment and its components.

This would also allow new behaviours to be introduces without the problem of them being artificially engineered. In fact, if DNA were remade so that actions were based on the manipulation of substances, all possible behaviours the bot could do would be described.

Does this make ANY sense? It does to me but I'm not too good at describing it.  :(

Also I'm sorry if this has already been suggested or discussed elsewhere; if that's the case then someone can delete this thread and point me in the direction of the old one.

Can anyone give me a hand with this quetion I've been set? I can't seem to work out how to do it.

Think of the points of a plane as being represented by vectors
[x]
[y]
Say, in each

case, whether the set of vectors given is a single point, a line, or the entire plane.

[x] : [ 1/root(2)   -1/root(2) ] [x] = [ 0  0 ]
[y]   [ 1/root(2)     1/root(2)] [y]     [ 0  0 ]

I just got my A-level results today,

Computing - B, Maths - A, Electronics - A, Physics - B

I needed AAA to get into Oxford, so I thought aww I've not got in...

But they accepted me anyway! I am soooo pleased

Bugs and fixes / Problem with 3.4 source code?
« on: August 12, 2005, 04:47:44 PM »
Hey, I've unzipped the source code and am having trouble running it...
I'm getting 'User-defined type not defined' on 'pos as Vector' in robots.bas

I have copied fastmathDLL.dll to system32 folder, and tried running regsvr32 at the command prompt to check if that was the problem but got even more weirdness there. Something about an entry point not being found and the file not being registered.

Am I doing something wrong? I reeeeally wanna get a peek at 3.4, someone help please!!  :(

Bugs and fixes / 33 energy weirdness!
« on: July 31, 2005, 05:25:23 AM »
I'm using the new update [Num] uploaded, 2.37.4 and am having a weird problem with the energy level of veggies when they are being shot.

When being shot at with -1 shots, the veggie's energy drops fine but for some reason gets stuck on 33, and stays there indefinitely until I either move the bot firing or the veggie being fired upon.

I'm not sure if this has already been reported or is because I am doing something wrong but it is very weird to be sure.

Biology / Multicellular organisms - why??
« on: July 28, 2005, 01:22:30 AM »
I've been wondering for a while what the advantages were that lead to the evolution of multi-cellular organisms. I've tried a google session but have been unsuccessful.

Surely there were more prone to problems with mutations, required more energy, and were much more difficult to organise than single-celled organisms.
