This has been discussed at length in other threads (which I would link to if the bloody search system worked on this board). Just look through the old stuff on specialization, enzymes and/or stomachs if you can find them.
Basically the idea is that we blur the line between veggies and robots by giving every bot a bit pattern enzyme digestive process.
Some bit patterns will be for photosynthesis and will enable veggies to take energy from the sun while other patterns will allow other forms of digestion via shots, ties etc.
There is no point shooting if you don't have the necessary enzyme to digest the returned food.
This bit pattern can be hard programmed via a (hashed) pattern in the DNA code or can evolve. It will be limited in that a veggie that gains the ability to shoot and to digest the food will have to sacrifice a bit of his efficiency at photosynthesis in order to do so.
We should be able to get some weird hybrids after some mutations.
Older robots will automatically have an enzyme set assigned to them by the program. Check the autotroph button to generate a pure photosynthesis pattern or leave it unchecked to create a default carnivore pattern that allows both tie feeding and shots but both at reduced efficiency level from that of a true specialist. A bit pattern stored in the DNA file will overrule this so programed and saved evolved species can be reloded with no loss of efficiency.
