At the risk of losing of castration I haven't gotten to peek at this really in depth yet (I'm at work, boss sent me the link, but warned me not to peek at it during work if I value certain body parts ;) ).  But looks like a fun idea.

I got a 404 on everything related to that but I managed to get a pdf out of google's cache, not sure if it is just me, but I've attached it here. I've only read bits and pieces of it, it does seem pretty interesting. It also seems like something that you wouldn't really able to hand author bots for easily. Another thing I noticed was the relatively fast results they were getting. Their data shows a large increase in ability from .5 to 2 million cycles. Most of our bots take a lot longer for a large competitive increase.

I think their solution space is smaller.  Less area to explore = faster evolution.

too bad that original page doesn't offer program executable, it would be nice if program exist as screensaver

Shasta:
It actually does provide a way run it. If you download the source code and have Processing installed, it is actually pretty simple to start up the simulation.
