Buggy DB with Win7 x64
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:38:56 PM »
For the most part I can run sims, and DB(ver. 2.43.1L) does work ,for a time. However, most of the bots seem broken, they can get around, but just act ,wrong. The Triangulus_P ether makes a triangle missing a side or a large blob of small bots linked together spinning worthlessly around. And the only bot that work seemingly correctly is Alga_Minimalis and Animal_simple(or whatever it is called...). Also I cannot load the preset settings, it says "The settings file is incompatable with this version.  Settings not loaded." sometimes, bots are autotrofs even when the box is unchecked and other times they aren't plants when I select it(occasional). After running DB for an hour or two the drop down menus wig out, and they don't display properly(they are black). As said in the title my OS is Windows 7 64bit. I'm just looking for suggestions on how to get DB to run smoothly.

Edit: i have tried DB ver 2.44.04 and i cant delete the robots already in the Native Species box.

You can't really use 2.1 bots or settings with the latest versions.  They're just too different.  Browse the bestiary for more modern bots to play with.  Animal Minimalis is sort of a standard bot since it's so simple.  It's also pretty robust to program changes.

Can you post a screenshot?

I have windows 7 64bit at work.  I haven't done exhaustive work with DB, but I definitely installed it and ran it as a test without problems. But my windows 7 is also not exactly ANSI.  I've turned UAC off, for instance, so running as an administrator might solve some of your problems.  You can also always run it in compatibility mode.

The procedure is open-up DB 2.44.04 and begin a sim. then close DB, I am then left with those lasts used bots, and to start a new one I must delete them for a different sim. Theat is when this happens.(Ignore the second screen I am trying zerobots)
Edit: forgot to thank you for clearing up the compadibility issues ,if I save a setting I can load it with minimal issues, mutation rate never is saved though.

I think there was a bug with trying to delete bots if there weren't any bots in the species list that I fixed.  This might be related, dunno.

I tried this quickly on my work machine, and it looks like none of the settings were saved after exit (which is a bug in its own right).  But I was able to delete species successfully.  So not sure what to tell you.  Maybe send me your lastexit settings?

Edit: however the internet mode wont connect,(of ver 2.43.1L)

That's a persistent problem.  We think it's something to do with how VB6 handles FTP connections.  I don't really know how to fix it :/  You may or may not need to restart Darwinbots from time to time to get it to connect again (different people report different levels of success with IM).

It seems Houshalter computer is the only once I can connect to. I works for a few seconds and then DB freezes.

It doesn't actually connect to other computers.  It just saves/loads bots to/from our server using FTP.

The freezing means it's doing a download or upload.  It should unfreeze after a while.

Some times it freezes, other times its a full-on DB crash, the window fades to gray-ish and it closes.

When it grays out like that it means its not processing events that windows is sending to it.  Again, this is consistent with the program just doing something in the background (uploading or downloading).  Windows might get impatient and ask you if you want to close it because the program has "stopped responding" to its messages (usually the mouse clicks you send it).  But if you are patient and give it a while it should come back to life.

If not...  well, like I said, different people have reported different levels of success with it.

Ok I got DB2.44.04 to work fine, as of internet mode. I allowed fire wall access to public and private I believe. stops for a second unlike 2.43.1L, which wont come-back on, for 7 minutes.(then I deem DB dead)
Edit: there are still hiccups in the system but it works!:

Lol, i put it on the teleporter. It couldn't hope to survive in my sim because the cost multiplier is at 72 and rising. Sammehs bot only survives because its learned to be a good tie feeder and i have the veggies loaded with virually unlimited nrg each cycle. What bots do you have running in yours? I think i sent a few hgt viruses in to try to get them to spread in my sim but they just died or went through the teleporter.
