subspecies distance

In the wiki it discusses generational/genetic distance graphs, but what does the subspecies distance graph in DB2.43.1L mean?

Numsgil:
I think it's how many generations you have to go back to find a common ancestor.  Either that or it's the number of mutations since the common ancestor.  Something like that.
