If all you want to do is see some colonies grow, then just add "Alga minimalis" to your sim (the bot should come with regular DB installation).  Make sure you check "Vegetable (autotroph)" checkmark on the right side of the menu.  Let the sim run and you should see some colonies forming in a couple of minutes (depending on the speed of your computer).

Actually, here is a simulation for you (see attachment).  Just load it into the program and you'll be all set.
