Very confusing
« on: November 15, 2006, 07:50:56 PM »
I've become lately very interested in evolution type sims lately and I just cant get this one going.

I think the first one I toyed around with for awhile was Darwin Pond.  It works really well, until you figure out how simple the DNA and such is.  Got boring pretty quick.

The one I've seen with the most potential, I think, was just called Evolve (other than maybe this software?).

I'm not a programmer and I'm less interested in writing my own DNA, at least at first.  I just want to throw some bots in there, and watch them evolve.  Hopefully a few different species with some sort of ecosystem and all.

It's just so complicated, everything dies, I can't get it right.  Everything I read, it feels like coming in the last month of a chemistry class.

Is there some simple settings someone can describe so I can just watch something happen in order to help me figure out the rest?

THe forum is like a labyrinth.

I wrote a nice long post that my browser decided to erase.

Basically, you'll want to run Animal Minimalis.  Find it in the beastiary.  It's a simple bot that should be able to survive.

Post any simulations that you're having problems with by saving it, zipping it, and uploading it here.  We'll help you figure out what's wrong.

I'm sorry?  Maybe I didn't start at the beginning enough?  Let's try this again.

1.  Be sure you're running the latest version (2.42.9).

2.  The bots that come with the program aren't very good in modern versions.  The beastiary is an excellent source for modern bots.    Animal Minimalis is an excellent starting point for both learning DNA and running successful simulations.

Copy and paste its DNA into a .txt file named Animal Minimalis.  Put this file in your robots directory of your Darwinbots installation.  This is probably C:\Program files\Darwinbots II\robots

3.  Add Animal Minimalis to your simulation by the "add species" button.

4.  Run simulation.  If it doesn't meet your determination of a good simulation, save the sim, put in in a zip file, and upload your zipped file for us to look at your settings.

Hiya, welcome to the forum and hope you decide to stick with us for a while.

I totally agree, DB can be very confusing when you start. This is a group project though and if you are still having problems I'm sure someone can post a sim for you to try.

If not, then perhaps you'll visit us again in the future, work is being done on improving the new user experience so hopefully in the near future you'll find it much simpler to get started.
