What roles should the program and the metabolic DNA have in metabolism?

What are eneryone's feelings on metabolism at the moment?

My vote's to let the DNA try and figure out the paths.  Assuming, of course, that that's not terribly difficult.  I'd know more one way or another once I actually sit down and start coding it.

MY vote's to let DNA control metabolism, as it reflects real life.

IMO It should have different layers of complexity. What I really don't want is a system in which even the simplest of bots need dozens of genes to even be able to digest their food.
