Still not enough in the wiki ^^
« on: December 10, 2005, 07:01:26 PM »
After a long time I wanted to look into DB and again the same happens as when I first came here, there is nothing to look up certain commands or to know they even exist.(For example I do not know what ploc does)
Relying on the fact that people always read every article etc and follow the newest talk so they know whats going on only leads to snobism and frustration for most people tyring to get a grip of the language, just wanted to mention that.

The trouble is that it is just so much work to keep writing up all the information about the commands.
If somebody would like to volunteer for the job of compiling all this information then please feel free to do so.

Ploc is used to set the memory location in the target robot for custom poison shots to hit.

You can set ploc at the birth of the robot and it will remain the same throughout its life. Or you can set it at any other time you like.

When a -1 shot hits a robot that has poison, it sets off a return poison shot that will set the memory location (defined in ploc in the poison bot) in the attacker bot, to zero for a length of time equal to the amount of poison contained in the shot.
There are 10 kinds of people in the world
Those who understand binary.
and those who don't

Endy was doing a lot of work on the wiki ...
but it's still not organized not is everything linked to yet.
I can't find some of the stuff I know is there either.
here's one page with a little:
http://www.darwinbots.com/WikiManual/index...grammers_Portal
and here is a complete list of all pages ...
http://www.darwinbots.com/WikiManual/index...pecial:Allpages
so from here you might find some stuff.

like PY says ...
it takes a lot of time ...
and it also seems to me those who already know ...
don't have much interest in helping out those who don't.
that's just the feeling I got, and still get ...
and it's disappointing.

but the advantage of having a wiki is that anyone who learns
how to use the wiki can add any information they want ...
so this is one way that others could contribute ...
to share the information with those who do not
yet have a handle on it and actually be part of DB.
this is how we might begin to actually make this a 'group' project ...
and imo, that would be a very positive thing to do ...
and maybe THE thing that will keep DB happening.

I kind of lost interest in the wiki ...
after putting in a LOT of time and effort inwriting up all those pages on
bebugging ... hoping a few people could use it as an aid to begin to learn
how to use the wiki, learn a bit about VB programming and DB programming
all at the same time ... but  I never got even one comment or any feedback whatsoever from anyone about anything there.
so I figured why waste my time.

if I see some group effort there ...
maybe I'll get back into it.
and if not ...
then forget it.

couple more pages at the wiki to check out:
I see Endy did make some effort to link these together but they aren't easy to find:
http://www.darwinbots.com/WikiManual/index...=Pre2.4#Sysvars
http://www.darwinbots.com/WikiManual/index...title=Robot_DNA
http://www.darwinbots.com/WikiManual/index.php?title=Pre2.4
http://www.darwinbots.com/WikiManual/index...title=Operators

I haven't done anything about making the links easier to navigate
as I didn't know what Endy had in mind.

but there is a lot of stuff there ... and the search function doesn't seem to help.
I'd suggest looking at this list of all pages and see if you might find what you
are looking for from there.
http://www.darwinbots.com/WikiManual/index...pecial:Allpages

oh yeah ...
you could also add info where you see it missing ...
help the next guy not to have to reinvent the wheel.

Writing up pages for all the commands is alot of work.  Plain and simple, most of us are lazy.

The in-game hlp menu will tell you what alot of commands do, as will PY's tutorial.

Other than that, I guess you just need to ask questions about whatever you don't understand.
